Advancement of Sustainable Adventure Tourism in Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

Adventure tourism has become one of the most effective sources of economic development in Himalayan areas, but its development in ecologically sensitive locations causes enormous sustainability issues. In this paper, the researcher will critically analyze how much eco-friendly practices are being embraced in the tourist adventure industry of Himachal Pradesh in India. As part of the research, the researchers seek to find out the level of environmental sustainability awareness, behavioural adoption and policy perceptions of stakeholders in major adventure tourism locations. Mixed method research design was adopted and was predominantly quantitative. A structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data on 200 respondents which included tourists, local residents and tourism stakeholders in major adventure destinations like Manali, Kullu, Dharamshala, Bir-Billing, Kasol and Spiti Valley. There was the use of descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, and the one-way ANOVA to analyse differences in stakeholders groups. The findings were put into context using secondary data on the peer-reviewed literature and policy documents. The findings show that the majority of the population is aware of the eco-tourism (80%), renewable energy programs (70%), and that they strongly support the idea of more stringent environmental standards (80%). But there is still disproportionate adoption of behaviour, with lower levels of involvement taking place in waste segregation (60%), and community-based eco-tourism behaviour (55%). The findings of the inferential analysis indicate statistically significant differences in the sustainability behaviour and policy awareness between the stakeholder groups, which demonstrates discrepancies between policy awareness and practice. The paper concludes that despite the fact that Himachal Pradesh is making steps towards sustainable adventure tourism, there is a need to shift the focus of the current initiatives towards behaviour-based, community-based governance strategies, though. The results provide real world lessons to policy makers and tourism planners who are interested in creating a balance between environmental conservation and a sustainable economic development in the mountain destinations.
